Scarlett Johansson (born November 22 1984 New York City New York, U.S.) American actor and performer whose performance versatility earned her praise in a variety of genres from period drama to thriller and action adventure. Johansson was the daughter of an architect as well as a producer, was born as a child in New York City. Hunter was twin to the younger sibling. When she was a child she began to develop a passion for performing and started performing in commercials by the age of seven. In order to improve her skills, she attended classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan as well as at the Professional Children's School. She made her debut as a film actress in North (1994) when she was nine. She was just eight when she appeared with Ethan Hawke on Off-Broadway in Sophistry. Johansson played the lead role in Just Cause (1995), before making her big break by starring in Manny & Lo - a story about two sisters, orphans that get away. The Horse Whisperer (1998) Johansson's role, which is the role of a teenager with a disfigurement, was hailed by the critics. Then she was hailed as cynical teenager Rebecca in Ghost World.
